If mdf isn t available and you need to look for another option the baltic birch plywood is the next best thing you can get. Another great thing about birch is it will always have less saw dust. As far as i could tell when using it it had about the same strength as mdf.
The birch will be more expensive but will last longer in the big picture. It s a recipe that results in a void free core with a number of advantages which is why in the u s. The mdf is more prone to mold and mildew not an issue if you seal with an oil based paint though and the dust particles are smaller than the birch making it more prone to inhalation while working with it. I ve also done some where the front face has a stepped dado around the outside edge which mates into another dado around the inside faces of the sides which were mitered.
